Have you ever thought about what food represents in our lives beyond sustenance?

For countless centuries, food has meant something far beyond the satisfaction of a nagging urge for calories. For human beings, a consistent source of food means personal connection, greater potential, wider success, and a chance to grow and to think about more than simple survival. It means dignity and health, and can be a source of great comfort.

To provide food for someone else is considered in most cultures to be one of the most caring and profound of human expressions. Whether at the Thanksgiving dinner table, or an average Wednesday night meal after schoolwork is finished, FOOD IS LOVE. And love is always followed closely by hope.

In fiscal year 2018-19, Central Floridians made dramatic expressions of ‘food love’ through support of the Second Harvest Food Bank mission. You spent long hours in our distribution centers, giving your time and effort so that more food could find its way to our neighbors’ tables. You reached into your personal resources, and shared financial gifts that provided food or much-needed job training. You gave donations of food itself, and asked others to help you do more through food drives. You reached out to our elected officials to make your voices heard about issues that deeply affect people living in poverty.

All of these things provided more food, to be sure. But not just food. It also provided love, support, and hope for thousands of ordinary people who often run short of those things.

I hope you will appreciate the incredible works of love detailed in this report, and I thank you for your part in making them possible for our community.
