Kelly is the mother of two young children and is passionate about education. A disabled former pre-school teacher, she now volunteers in the classroom and with the PTA to ensure the teachers, students and other parents are able to achieve success.
When her husband lost his job, the family tried to make it on their own because others were in worse situations. "We still have a roof over our heads," they told themselves. Kelly remembers nights that she and her husband didn’t eat so that their children could.
At the encouragement of her mother, Kelly turned to one of Second Harvest's feeding partners for emergency food assistance. The family also began receiving SNAP benefits. In addition to the staples available at the pantry, SNAP provides access to fresh fruits and vegetables, meats and bread.
"To my family, hunger is having peanut butter in the pantry, but no bread to put it on," explains Kelly.
Her husband recently started a new job, but it will be several weeks before his first paycheck. In the meantime, Kelly and her family are grateful for the support in their time of need.
