This summer, with your generous help, Second Harvest Food Bank is preparing for a different kind of disaster. One that affects 1 in 5 kids in our community, summer hunger.
This daily disaster plagues low-income families with an immediate grocery bill hike. With school cafeterias closed, breakfasts and lunches at home can add up quickly. As a result, too many families trade nutritious foods for more affordable empty calories that growing bodies don't need.
Summer is a time for kids to be worry-free. Summer is a time for them to be care-free. Summer is a time for them to be just kids. Your support can help kids have a worry-free, hunger-free summer.
Hunger doesn't take a summer break. And, with your help, neither does Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and its robust hunger-relief network.
Your support this summer will help provide 250,000 meals daily through more than 500 feeding partners and mobile food distributions. Additionally, Second Harvest Food Bank will provide meals to 67 feeding sites that serve fresh, nutritious meals to kids age 18 and under for free.
"The kids want bicycles, but we need food," explains Lilly, who brings her grandkids and great-nephews to a summer meal site in Sanford.
Lilly's family and kids can enjoy a hot lunch every week day. This year's menu meets childhood nutrition standards while offering a mix of popular dishes such as turkey burgers and BBQ chicken with collard greens and introducing kids to new foods from different cultures with the new Floribbean picadillo and cheese calzone.
With food in their bellies, kids can get back to the business of being kids this summer, thanks to you. Thank you for helping families and kids in Central Florida have a worry-free, hunger-free summer.
