Janet is not your average senior. This widow stays active by raising her five great grandkids by herself on a fixed income. Before she retired, Janet worked two jobs and even then, it wasn’t enough.
"My money didn’t reach to the end of the month," Janet explains. "There were nights we went to bed hungry and there wasn’t anything I could do about it."
With 1 in 8 Central Floridians facing hunger, stories like Janet’s are not uncommon. After paying rent and utilities, there’s often not much left for necessities like food.
When she turned to her local food pantry, supported by Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, Janet got the food she needed to nourish herself and her family. Each week she is able to take home pantry staples along with fresh fruits and vegetables.
"No matter what I need, they’re always here for me," Janet says, graciously.
As she drives away, Janet knows that everything will be ok, in part, thanks to you.
