August 2018 Health & Hunger Pilots


Pilot for West Orange Healthcare District-3/17 through 3/20
3 year pilot to evaluate the effect of access to healthy, diabetic-appropriate food, along with periodic nutrition education, in improving clinical and behavioral outcomes for low-income patients referred from FQHC’s.

Pilot for Orlando Health-8/17 through 7/18 (now extended through late 2018)
1 year pilot to evaluate the effect of access to healthy, nonperishable foods and fresh produce for very low income patients discharged from hospital and receiving management by a hospital outreach team.

Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) with Food Intervention Pilot funded by Feeding America and Americares through 1/2019
1 year pilot to evaluate the clinical and behavioral outcomes of low income DPP participants when diabetes appropriate food is provided as part of the program through the local food bank compared to DPP participants who did not receive food as part of the program.

Capacity-building Pilot for Winter Park Health Foundation-6/15 through 5/18-completed
3 year pilot to track the increase of fresh and frozen healthy foods to low income residents resulting from increased equipment capacity in the form of refrigerators and freezers. Blog: Serve More People with More Healthy Food.

Healthy Food Boxes funded by Aetna and Adventist Health Services Population Health Services for distribution through SHFB Healthy Pantry Network.

Pilot for Florida Hospital Community Care
1 year pilot to evaluate the effect of access to healthy, diabetic-appropriate food, along with periodic nutrition education, in improving clinical and behavioral outcomes for food insecure patients with multiple diagnoses, including at least one chronic, diet-related disease referred from Florida Hospital Apopka.

New Pilots/Projects under Discussion

Proposal to Florida Hospital Community Health Impact Council to develop 20+ Feeding Partners into the Central Florida Healthy Pantry Network and to provide diabetes appropriate foods and nutrition education to referred low income patients for three years.

Pilot for United Health Care
Evaluate the effect of access to healthy, diabetic-appropriate food, along with periodic nutrition education, in improving healthcare adherence for food insecure pregnant women who qualify for Medicaid.

On-site pantry development at Florida Dept. of Health in Orange County.

Proposal to Orlando Magic Youth Foundation to evaluate the effect of increased access to healthy, diabetic-appropriate food, along with periodic nutrition education and dietetic counseling for children referred from Grace Medical Home pediatricians.
