Educating children in our community about healthy eating is a priority for Second Harvest. We partner with Universal Orlando and the Universal Orlando Foundation to bring “Bites, Camera, Action!” to middle-school children in Orlando.
Bites, Camera, Action! is a mobile nutrition program with three components that work together to address hunger in our community: a mobile pantry, food truck and nutrition education. A partnership with After School All Stars helps us provide nutrition education and live cooking demonstrations to middle school students along with a healthy, hearty afternoon snack to keep them fueled well into the evening. Weekly, children are encouraged and inspired to make healthier choices. At the end of the program, each child receives a family food bag to take home. By engaging students in these activities, we provide a nutritionbased multi-sensory learning experience, while addressing barriers to needy students receiving food. Since 2012, those same students have received more than 40,000 pounds of supplemental food to take home to their families.
Nearly 4,273 Universal volunteers have donated thousands of hours packing more than 263,828 meals for delivery to veterans, adults, families and seniors in low-income neighborhoods, and at transitional homeless sites and community resource fairs. The Universal Orlando Foundation Bites Camera Action! refrigerated truck is on the road each weekday delivering critically-needed nourishment where there often is none.
