Recipes for Success

Meet Dezmond

Dezmond initially thought his career would be in technology but couldn't resist the allure of culinary arts. During quarantine, his passion for cooking soared. Cooking gave him solace and delight, from whipping creative ramen dishes to preparing his favorite cuisine: Italian food.

While volunteering at a local food pantry supported by Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, he learned about the Culinary Training Program. This transformative opportunity promised to harness his love for cooking and shape it into a sustainable career.

"It felt natural," says Dezmond. "I've used some of the equipment before, but never on this large of a scale."

The vast array of ingredients and equipment in the Darden Foundation Community Kitchen excited him, and Dezmond was able to thrive under the guidance of the program's expert chefs.

Dezmond encountered his fair share of challenging recipes while participating in the program. From the frustrations of a dish gone awry to cream puffs that didn't rise as expected, he discovered the highs and lows of cooking. However, the perseverance and the joy he experiences when his creations succeed far outweigh any temporary disappointments.

The Culinary Training Program has honed Dezmond's culinary skills and helped him develop invaluable interpersonal abilities. Once accustomed to keeping to himself, he has gained newfound communication and collaboration skills. Dezmond marvels at how every student comes together, each contributing their expertise to create a harmonious, exquisite dish.

Dezmond's journey through the Second Harvest Culinary Training Program embodies the spirit of determination, growth, and culinary excellence. His unwavering dedication to honing his craft and his passion for creating memorable dining experiences make him a shining example of the program's profound impact.

Thanks to your support, Dezmond is eager to embark on his culinary career.

"I'm excited to get to work and realize my potential," says Dezmond. "I want to see just how far I can go in this field."
