Meet Stacey

Stacey's journey unfolded in a series of chapters, each with its own unique challenges and revelations. She relocated to Orlando with aspirations of higher education, but the abrupt shift to online classes due to the pandemic posed unexpected difficulties. Her once-stellar GPA plummeted, casting a shadow over her scholarship.

Trying to find a next step, Stacey briefly worked at a daycare and considered becoming a teacher, but that path didn't feel right either. The turning point came when her aunt saw a segment about Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida's Culinary Training Program on television. The program awakened memories of being in the kitchen with her dad and opened her eyes to the possibility to build a fulfilling career for herself.

Entering the program, Stacey was greeted with nervous excitement and the magnitude of the challenge ahead made her apprehensive. Before joining the program, she had little experience in the kitchen other than watching her father at home. Growing up, she witnessed her dad masterfully creating delectable Italian dishes. These moments kindled an enduring admiration for the art of cooking. Even the subtleties, like a pinch of salt in baked goods or a dash of sugar in spaghetti sauce, captivated her young mind.

The desire to explore the culinary realm further blossomed with the birth of her daughter, who is of both Dominican and Colombian heritage. Propelled by her desire to embrace her daughter's cultural background and introduce her to diverse foods representing her ancestry, Stacey embarked on a culinary adventure, learning new recipes and cooking techniques.

"It's still kind of nerve-racking because there are a lot of things to remember," explains Stacey. "But once you know that you nailed it, it's an even better feeling."

Now, Stacey is excelling in the program, and she is immensely proud of her achievements, particularly her mastery of risotto, which earned the praise of the program's chef. Her dedication and hard work have paid off, and with each successful dish, her confidence grows stronger.

Looking ahead, Stacey has big plans for her future. She aims to complete her AA and AS degrees, while leveraging her culinary talents to secure a part-time job. The Culinary Training Program has not only prepared her for a career in the culinary industry but has also equipped her with valuable life skills.

Stacey's story is a testament to the power of perseverance, determination, and passion. It highlights how one can find their true calling in the most unexpected places and how the joy of cooking can transcend generations and cultures.
